The Other Space
Sunday 29 September
11.00am - 12noon
The Rickard Sisters talk about the unique joys and challenges of making graphic adaptations of Edwardian political novels. Hear what motivates their choices, how they go about the process and the tricks of adapting edgy contemporary fiction that the passage of time has turned ‘historical’. Collaboration with writers from beyond the grave requires careful choices and decisions to retain the spirit of the original whilst making sure their message stays relevant.
Scarlett and Sophie have produced graphic versions of Robert Tressell's The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (2020) and Constance Maud's No Surrender (2022), and are currently working on Ethel Carnie Holdsworth’s This Slavery (2025), all with SelfMadeHero. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was Eisner nominated for Best Adaptation.
