As the countdown continues toward the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in Bowness-on-Windermere (14th – 16th October 2022), here’s another in a series of interviews with some of the guests – a quick chat with comic creator Andrea Settimo, a creator based in Bologna, Italy.
Andrea is the co-founder of Delebile, an independent comic publisher, and the artist of The Corner (Sarbacane Editions, Rizzoli Lizard) and the author of Cardo / Decumano (Delebile) and Tutti Santi (Coconino Press).
What are you working on, comics-wise or illustration wise, right now, and when will it be published?
At the moment I am drawing a graphic novel, written by Alessandro Tota, entitled La Novella dell’Avventuriero, which will be released next year in Italy by Cococnino Press, and in France by Glénat.
Which comic or art project you’ve worked on are you most proud of – and where can people see it or buy it?
Maybe Cardo / Decumano, a comic series produced by Delebile.
How do you plan your day as a creator? (Do you plan your day?)
I don’t have a particular routine.
What’s the best thing about being a comics creator?
The fact of being able to tell anything, from a story of everyday life to a space epic, only with paper and pencil.
And the worst?
Probably the worst thing is the fact that it takes a long time to make a comic and that it takes very little to read it!
What most distracts you from getting your work done?
Probably the fear of doing a bad job … and the internet.
Do you think it’s easier or harder for young comic creators to get published today?
I think it’s easier. Many more books are produced, there are many more publishing houses interested in comics and social networks help to advertise your work.
Are you at all concerned by developments in “AI generated art”? What do you think might be its most significant impact on the comics industry and creators?
What worries me most about the use of artificial intelligence in the artistic field is the fact that tech companies use and profit from the work of authors, both from the past and contemporary, without having given their consent, without being paid or accredited.
Which one comic creator would you most like to meet, and why?
Maybe Taiyo Matsumoto, who has been a great source of inspiration in recent years. I’d like to see him while he works.
What one piece of advice do you offer people looking to work in the comics industry?
Read a lot and take an interest in other things than comics (photography, illustration, visiting art exhibitions, etc)
What’s your favourite comic right now and where can people get it?
Blood of the Virgin, by Sammy Harkham, self-produced series published for Crickets magazine, available on whatthingsdo.com.
What are you most looking forward to about coming to the Lakes this October?
It will be my first festival since the first lockdown! I hope to meet new interesting authors and I am also very curious to visit the place.
Andrea, thank you very much for your time, and we look forward to seeing you at the Festival!
