A new episode of Loving the Alien, a podcast hosted by Finn Miles, in association with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, features an all-new interview with comic creator Charlie Adlard.
A guest at this year's Festival (26th – 28th September 2025), Charlie has been a “veteran” of the comic industry for over 25 years and was the UK’s Comics Laureate 2017-2019.
He’s spent the majority of his time since 2003 working on The Walking Dead, which finished in 2019, and has received many industry awards for his work on the series culminating in winning the Sergio Aragonés International Award for Excellence in Comic Art in 2019.
In his time as a comic creator, he has worked on many other projects as far reaching as Mars Attacks, The X-Files, "Judge Dredd" and "Savage" for 2000AD, Batman, X-Men, Superman etc and creator-owned projects closer to his heart like Astronauts In Trouble, Breath Of The Wendigo, Codeflesh, Rock Bottom, Vampire State Building, and White Death.
In this new interview Charlie discusses comics in the pre-internet world, the virtues of working in creator-owned comics, where there’s control of one’s destiny, and.the advantages of the comics industry over other media such as film and TV.
he also talks about his love of the French comics industry, and the quest for original characters not ones that have been passed down for a hundred years or so (how many Batman stories really can be told?).
Along the way, discover his enthusiasm for the quality of Apple TV over other streaming services, his love of music and playing drums in his band, and the secrets of his 20+ year-long partnership with Robert Kirkham.
