More European Creators join 2019 Festival Line-Up

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2019 has announced a number of European comic creators who will be heading to Kendal in October for this year’s weekend-long Festival.

Joining the recently-announced Belgian and Belgium-based creators Serge BaekenEphameronLoic GaumeBen GijsemansValentine LaffittePascal LemaitreMarine Schneider,Judith Vanistendael.and Joris Vermassen will be JibéPierre van HoveBenoît PeetersArthur de PinsFabien ToulméAlessandro Tota and Nicolas Wild.

Among these latest guests to be announced, Arthur de Pins may be the best known to many, an animator turned comics creator whose works included Zombillénium, which he brought to screen in 2017.

Fabien Toulmé broke into the world of graphic novels in 2014, with his first graphic novel Ce n’est pas toi que j’attendais in which he told the story of the birth of his daughter, who has Down’s syndrome, and Nicolas Wild is the author of the critically acclaimed Kabul Disco: How I Wasn’t Kidnapped in Afghanistan.

Benoît Peeters, who was appointed the UK’s first ever comics professor, at Lancaster University back in 2015, also makes a welcome return to the Festival.

“We’re delighted to welcome a range of European comic creators to this year’s Festival in October,” says Festival Director Julie Tait, “both old faces and new will add to what’s going to be a terrific mix of talent.”

Claudine Ripert-Landler, director of the Institut français du Royaume-Unicommented: “The Institut français has been supporting LICAF since the beginning, bringing French artists and programmers to the Festival every year, and we are delighted to have such a good French line-up for 2019.”

In addition to its main guests, the Festival also recently announced its Comics Clock Tower creator line up, which will include a number of creators attending thanks to support from Festival patron Sean Phillips: artists Mack ChaterPaul Harrison DaviesEmma G, EmmainkyMichael Kennedy,Roger LangridgeJoe LathamAngela Pan, writer John Harris Dunning and the team behind the graphic novel Square EyesAnna Mills and Luke Jones.

In other news, the Festival has confirmed that it will host the presentation of this year’s Sergio Aragonés International Award For Excellence In Comic Art to Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard. His win was announced at the Reubens Awards, held recently at the inaugural NCSFest in Huntington Beach, California. The Lakes Festival is a partner of NCSFest, with Lyon BD.
