It's time for another episode of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival Podcast, and in this episode the team interview the guys behind the Clockwork Watch multimedia project, who are a regular part of the annual event (returning 12th - 14th October 2018).
The podcast opens with Ian and Nikki's reviews of the wonderful The Girl and the Glim by Doig and Swift, Ellerbisms by Marc Ellerby and Becoming Unbecoming by Una, a thought-provoking personal account of gender violence told in graphic-novel form, set against the backdrop of the 1970s Yorkshire Ripper man-hunt.
The main focus of the podcast is a chat (broken a little by background sound, but this shouldn't put you off) with Yoms Ayeni, the creator of the collaborative storytelling project Clockwork Watch, and his editor, Corey Brotherson, whose projects include Magic of Myths and Deadlier Than. Ian and Nikki talk with the pair about creating a universe and how to really drive sales behind the table at a comics event.
Clockwork Watch – initially a film project that became comic series, and a collaborative storytelling project, is set in a retro-futurist vision of Victorian England. It was voted 2015 best graphic novel by the readers of Steampunk Chronicle.
Launched thanks to a successful crowdfunding pitch back in 2011, it was intended to be a five-year immersive participatory steampunk story told through graphic novels edited by Corey, the first books drawn drawn by Jennie Gyllblad.
The latest book is Evolution, written by Yomi, edited by Corey, with art is by Ed Jimenez, colouring by Kote Carjaval, lettering by Mike Stock and features a cover by Megan Bradbury, title by Fabio Duarte Martins.
Mixing comics and faux newspaper articles and more expanding the Clockwork Watch universe, it follows the critically acclaimed Clockwork Watch series including The Arrival, Breakaway, Countenance and the popular spin off, Tick Tock IPA.
There's also a look at the new Comichaus app for independent comics, described as "Netflix for comics", which Ian is hugely enthusiastic about, especially considering the minimal subscription price (£3 a month, £5 without ads)
"Mike's Mutterings" (from Mike Williams) focuses on the comics sub genre "Cowboys in Space" (which includes a nod to 2000AD's "Flesh" and Joss Whedon's Firefly series,
This Man... This Pete continues his look at influential American comics artist Jack Kirby, and the Podcast features a new pop culture section talking about the new Avengers trailer, Stranger Things 2, Paddington 2 and the game Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.
