Created by Dave McKean, Black Dog is a further illustration of how comic art is tackling major social and historical themes and is fast becoming an art form which is finally gaining the attention it deserves amongst art critics and art commissioners.

Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash, by Dave McKean is co-commissioned by The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, On a Marche sur la Bulle and 14-18 NOW, WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Black Dog is Dave McKean’s response to the work and writing of painter Paul Nash. Nash, who created powerful and disturbing paintings that captured the nightmare-like battlefields he witnessed during the First World War.

Black Dog is both a graphic novel and a performance spanning many different media – comic art, music, graphic story-telling, projections and visual art. The performance has toured internationally, including a sell-out performance at Tate Britain, as part of the Toronto Comic Art Festival on 11th May, 2017 and as a closing performance at the Derby Book Festival in June 2017.

Black Dog has been awarded the Event of the Year at the Cumbria Life Culture Awards 2017.
