At the annual Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the main aim of its Comics Marketplace has always been to create an environment which encourages networking and opportunities to discover more about the global comics scene alongside selling to our audiences and guests. Ultimately, the Festival has always wanted to find ways to get British comics seen more widely, and to provide a platform for the developments of creators’ careers.

Love creating your own characters? Interested in drawing and illustrating? Are you a fan of Manga? If so, pick up a competition sheet from your local library in Cumbria – and create your own Manga character!

Westmorland and Furness Council are running a Manga Character Design Competition in connection to with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival-organised "Make Mine Manga Exhibition" at Barrow Library, which is on display there until 18th May 2024

The Make Mine Manga exhibition that has recently toured libraries across the North West, and opens at Barrow-in-Furness Central Library next week, is heading to Athens, to be part of the attractions at this year’s Comicdom CON Athens 2024 next month (17th – 19th May 2024).

Lakes International Comic Art Festival and VIP Brands Ltd. launch 2024 “Sophie Castille Award – English” for Comics in Translation

VIP Brands Ltd. has announced the 2024 Sophie Castille Award – English, this year’s award to again be presented in partnership with Comica and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, at the Festival’s annual event in Bowness-on-Windermere this autumn, taking place Saturday 28th September – Sunday 29th September.

The Sophie Castille Awards for Comics in Translation are for the best translation of graphic novels into a variety of languages around the world.

Bobby Joseph

Bobby was announced as the Comic Laureate 2023-25 during the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in 2023. He is an acclaimed comic writer, artist, tutor and editor whose work has often challenged and inspired its readers. His early work includes the creation of Skank magazine, where his best-known strip, “Scotland Yardie”, first featured, later collected by Knockabout Press in 2017. It was the first BAME graphic novel to be studied as a module on an English Literature MA course at King’s College, London.
