Each year we present artists from Europe who have grabbed our attention and who we want you to discover. This year is no exception, and we are excited to feature three artists: Karel Osoha, Nina Six and Reetta Niemensivu. 

Karel is based in Prague, Czechia and studied animation before becoming a comic artist. He has won several awards for his distinctive illustration work.

2024 sees the centenary of the death of the literary giant, Franz Kafka. His impact on comics, particularly Czech comics, is vast and we are lucky to welcome the leading expert on this Kafka and his legacy, Pavel Korinek.

At the heart of this event will be the launch of a new comic by internationally-acclaimed artist, Fumio Obata. Fumio’s style and work are influenced by both Japanese and European aesthetics. In 2022 LICAF, supported by the Czech Literary Centre, sent him on a mission to Find Franz!

Paul Gravett is one of the leading lights in, and promoter of, the British comics industry. From promoting young artists in the 1980s, he went on to lead the Cartoon Art Trust, to run the London International Comics Festival, and to curate comics exhibitions internationally.

Juan Díaz Canales and Juan Guarnido redefined the standards for graphic storytelling in their Blacksad stories, carving striking characters that are both animalistic and intimately human. Guarnido’s sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to life, earning high praise from comics legends like Will Eisner, Stan Lee, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale. Stan Lee said of Blacksad: “As good as it gets”.

Watch a Live draw session and walk away with a genuine VIZ original worth up to £10 million.

Have you always dreamed of having an original piece of VIZ artwork hanging on your wall? Or perhaps it was a nightmare. Well, now that dream/nightmare can come true, because VIZ artists Graham Dury and Simon Thorp will be drawing characters on art board to give away to every member of the audience in their Live Draw.

With book titles such as My Pussy is Hungry and You Are Nothing, Hugleikur Dagsson has an army of fans worldwide. By day, he relentlessly produces his simple drawings infused with dark of plain sick sense of humour. By night, he’s a successful stand-up comedian, appearing at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as well as writing and directing for the screen. 

This event will feature plenty of audience participation, uncontrollable laughter and sharp intakes of breath.

Most artists plough a lonely furrow. But Emma Vieceli can – and does – turn her prestigious pencil to a star-spanning variety of genres, and always produces pure magic. Graphic novel adaptations of Shakespeare? Check. Video games? No problem. Illustrating YA novels? Yup. Working alone or in teams? Outstanding either way. She even draws maps!

This is your chance to meet Emma, as we explore how one artist can play so many roles – and be so brilliant in all of them.

They come from different countries. Their art styles come from different worlds. But Tom and Pieter stand united as two of the greatest parodists working in comics today. In this session they will live-draw and discuss their own unique approaches to the ancient art of taking the p – and they will also choose three great examples from history that have inspired them.
